April wishes from Sang

Warm April Wishes from Sang! Thank you for being here, it means everything:)

Five Q and A’s w/ Sang

Seasons Women

“I want to put myself out on the canvas-if I can-I want to create something epic-something moving and soulful.”

-Sang

1. If red had a voice in your studio this year, what would it be daring you to do? Where is that fire showing up in your recent work?

“I’ve been moving towards experimenting and going out of my comfort zone with the use of color. Really paying more attention to the depth of color and light.”

2. You’re drawn to turtles and tortoises-armor and patience. Where do you build a shell in your art, and where do you let something stay soft and visible?

“I don’t know that I protect or build a shell in my art-I do however play it safe. I would like to show more emotion in my artwork-but lack of confidence and [harsh] self critique is often stifling to my creativity.”

3. You move between clay, paint, digital, and mixed media art. What does refusing one lane give you? Is that freedom its own kind of rebellion?

“Working digitally has become the easiest for expression-I love mixed media though. I enjoy the texture of paint, and paper. The sound of the pencil scratching the paper. Clay coating my hands and fingers. Clay is a medium I don’t have to think about as much-[working with clay] is freedom.”

4. What values are non-negotiable in your work? How do those convictions shape the way you build a piece?

“I do not have [concious] values or convictions when completing an art piece. I just work on it until it feels complete. If I do have any values or convictions, they are in my head and unable to be translated into words-I just know when it is finished.”

5. If this birthday marked a creative risk, what would you try-something messy, bold, or slightly impractical-just to see what happens?

“I’m attempting to challenge myself to push beyond my comfort in drawing and create more dramatic, emotional, and in depth pieces. I want to put myself out on the canvas-if I can-I want to create something epic-something moving and soulful.”
